2019 ANNUAL MEETING AND TECHNICAL SESSIONS

The Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (AAPT) is actively soliciting paper offers for its 2019 Annual Meeting and Technical Sessions. The Annual Meeting is attended by specialists from academia, research organizations, material producers, contractors, national and state authorities, and consultants from around the world. Papers reporting on studies concerning any aspect of asphalt paving technology or related fields are considered. These can include research, design, construction, and maintenance issues dealing with all types of asphalt binders, asphalt mixtures, and pavement applications – including innovative ideas and improvements to current practice. Papers offered for the 2019 Annual Meeting must be submitted through the AAPT website. The deadline is September 14, 2018.
Special Call for Symposium Session
Although we take submissions on any asphalt topic, this year Directors-at-Large Jo Daniel and Dave Timm have announced a call for papers for the Symposium Session with the theme, “Implementation and Use of Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design (MEPD)”. Ten years ago, the 2008 Symposium session focused on implementation of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). This session predated the AASHTOWare Pavement ME software and since then many agencies have worked toward calibration, implementation, and/or development of their own mechanistic-empirical approaches. Many challenges still exist, though, including incorporation of innovative/new materials, climate modeling, and consideration of automated/connected vehicles, to name a few. The 2019 Symposium session will provide an overview of the current state-of-the-practice with the implementation and use of ME pavement design. To help with planning, the AAPT board is calling for practical/practice-ready papers that cover implementation and/or challenges in ME design for consideration of inclusion in the 2019 Symposium session. Paper submission for this specific call will follow the same procedures as submission of general topic papers and will be eligible for publication pending a peer review and acceptance by the Editorial Board.
New Publication Process
As discussed in Jacksonville in March our publication process is changing. The newly-formed Editorial Board will be conducting the reviews of all submitted papers and determining which ones will get published. The Board of Directors will decide which submissions will get presented at the Annual Meeting. While we expect these two groups to be essentially the same, there could be some differences – particularly since more papers may be accepted for publication than we have podium time available. So just know that publication may not equal presentation.
