AAPT’s Annual Meeting was held at The Island Hotel in Newport Beach, California on March 19-22, 2017. There were 262 attendees from 17 countries around the world, representing suppliers, consultants, contractors, universities, government agencies and other researchers – all with a shared interest in asphalt pavements. Thirty-five (35) students also attended, many for the first time at an AAPT meeting.
The technical part of the program was split – with two-thirds of the program devoted to technical sessions in which peer-reviewed papers were presented (and will ultimately be published in AAPT’s Journal) and one-third devoted to sessions on specific topics in which presentations were invited.
Twenty-six (26) peer-reviewed papers were included in the technical sessions this year, covering a wide range of hot asphalt technology topics such as asphalt binder and mixture testing, recycling, pavement preservation, and cracking. Pre-prints and presentations were available during the meeting for the attendees and are now available for download to all members. Just contact the AAPT office for access rights.
Three sessions of invited presentations were a key part of the technical program. The Leading Edge Workshop was held on Sunday afternoon to start the conference with focused presentations on “Practical Implementation of Asphalt Mixture Performance Tests”. The AAPT-ISAP International Forum brought together experts to discuss an international perspective of the recycling market and issues in a session titled “Hot Recycling: State of the Art and New Challenges”. The Symposium session included invited speakers on the topic of “Rubberized Asphalt Use is Up: Developments, Opportunities, and Challenges”.
In addition to the technical sessions, AAPT had some great social/networking activities available. These included:
- Icebreaker Reception
- Newer Members Breakfast
- No-Host Lunches (coordinated by the Newer Members Committee)
- Monday evening reception featuring sliders and local craft beers
- Newport Beach Pavement Inspection Tour (AM Running/Walking event)
- Social Hour/Banquet/Post-Banquet Reception
Great location. Great attendance. Great meeting. If you couldn’t make it this year, we hope that we’ll see you next year in Jacksonville, Florida on March 18-21, 2018!
